Valentines

I just got an email from Victor's preschool teacher. His class is having a Valentine's Day party on Friday, and he is able to bring Valentines for his classmates.

Do you get those at Target? Is there a coolness quotient inherent in certain styles? Do I let him sign his name next to the name I have written in more traditional penmanship? Is it better if I make them by hand and let work the glue stick? What, if any, are the social minefields of preschool Valentines?

Yes, there is an entire aisle at Target dedicated to both licensed and unlicensed valentines.

You should probably know that it is becoming increasingly common to send candy too. You will see candy designed for this purpose at Target, should you choose to participate in this growing social phenomenon.

I always have David participate in some way--by writing his name or scribbling a picture or placing stickers or stamps on each one. But if you and Victor have the patience for homemade valentines, more power to you.

Oh, and don't forget the teacher.

How do you have a child old enough to worry about this already?

I say go with the candy. Everything always tastes better in holiday flavors.

You can get Valentines at just about any store these days...Target, Walmart, grocery stores, drug stores. You can let Victor sign his name or do it yourself. In preschool, I think anything is okay. Candy or small toy or just a Valentine. Our kids' preschool teachers don't have you write the other kids' names on the Valentines, just sign your child's name thereby making it easier to pass them out. I say, do what makes you and Victor happy and don't worry about the social consequences much...I doubt there will be any one way or the other as long as he gets to participate. :)

I remember in elementary school valentines without candy was lame, but preschool might be too young for that. I would let victor chose on the target aisle. Making valentines is not worth it, for a premade box marked $2.99.

Agreed! Simple Valentine Rules:

#1 Candy is coolest. Pencils are grasping at straws, and plain paper - even if it DOES turn into a sticker, falls in the "lame" category.

#2 Kids don't really care who the candy came from, but the mom's who look through their kids stash will think you are one heckuva sport for adding to the festivities

#3 If you try and Martha Stewart it - it is truly pearls before swine. Think cheap, add food/candy, and you will be in the bonus.

#4 Remember, this whole event will take up 14 minutes of your child's day. If they hate writing their name 16 times, switch to initials!

#5 DON'T FORGET THE TEACHER!!!

It was very educational for me to read these comments, as I too, am headed into this new territory on Friday. Good luck to us all!
